Redmi Note 17 Pro review

This happens every year where the mid-range smartphone market gets flooded with phones trying to out-flash each other. We get shiny back panels, curved edges that look better than they actually feel, and camera that promise the moon. So, when I tried Redmi Note 17 Pro, I honestly expected the same old story. But after testing it, what hit me right away was just how practical this phone really is. Let me tell you all about this phone and help you decide if this one makes sense for you as a festive season buy.

The approach:
I think Xiaomi has stopped chasing delicate designs and instead built a phone that just keeps going. Starting at Rs 36,999 for the 8GB RAM/128GB storage, and going up to Rs 39,999 for the 8GB RAM/256GB storage, the message is clear: a lot of us care more about a great battery and a phone that won’t break easily, rather than fragile design experiments.

First impression:

Holding the phone for the first time, I immediately felt its solid build. There is no hiding the fact that packing a massive 9,000 mAh battery makes this a thicker, heavier phone than most of the sleek ones you see in stores. But surprisingly, the weight is balanced really well across the phone, so it doesn’t feel awkwardly heavy at the top. The flat edges and matte back make it super comfortable to hold for long stretches, and I can completely avoid the annoying smudges and fingerprints I get with glossy glass backs.

The screen:
What impressed me even more is the sheer peace of mind you get with this build. You have a Corning Gorilla Glass Victus 2 on the front and best of IP ratings like IP68 and IP69K for dust and water protection. This basically means I can stop babying this phone. Irrespective, I am caught in a sudden downpour or accidentally splash water on it, or drop it clumsily on the floor, this phone just shrugs it off. Though not intentionally, I did drop it and also, jumped into a pool while this phone was in my pocket but nothing happened at all. Good job, Xiaomi!

The 6.8-inch 1.5K display is crisp, and makes me read and watch content quite easily, even under direct sunlight. Then there is 120Hz refresh rate that’s enough for me to scroll everything smoothly. Even the bezels are thin enough to make watching videos immersive. The colours pop with a good amount of contrast and that is noticeable whenever I am streaming high-quality videos or reading long documents on the go. The speakers are a nice bonus too as they deliver clean, clear dialogue and get pretty loud, even if the bass is a bit on the lighter side. I tried watching a movie and I must say that the speaker setup impressed me a lot.

The processor:

There’s a Snapdragon 6s Gen 4 processor and HyperOS 3 software under the hood offering smooth, dependable experience for daily use. Throughout my testing, switching between apps, scrolling, messaging, and web browsing had no lag or stutter. It’s snappy and apps stay open in the background without constantly reloading. Even the software feels much cleaner and responsive than older versions.

A quick tip and gaming performance:
Here’s a quick buying tip: if you can, skip the base 128GB model and go for the 256GB storage version. The step up to faster UFS 3.1 storage means apps will load noticeably quicker, keeping the phone feeling fast. Gaming performance is dependable. The only time the back of the phone got noticeably warm was when I pushed it to the absolute limit, playing non-stop for long sessions on the highest graphics settings. Even then, the warmth never got uncomfortable, and the phone didn’t suddenly slow down, so it wasn’t a deal-breaker at all.

The best feature:
The battery life of the Redmi Note 17 Pro has completely changed how I think about charging. Most modern phones need a quick charge during the day or have to be plugged in overnight, this 9,000 mAh powerhouse gives me two full days of heavy use. Hours of using Google Maps, streaming music, using the hotspot, and keeping the screen bright, I still get enough battery at the end of the second day. The included 67W charger takes about 90mins to fully charge, which is quick for a battery this huge. Plus, the reverse charging turns the phone into a power bank. I can easily charge my wireless earbuds or even help out someone whose phone is dying.

Camera:
Where Xiaomi still has some work to do is the camera. The main 50-megapixel camera is capable, taking sharp, natural-looking photos with nice detail when the lighting is good. The issue is consistency. When you move between tricky lighting, high-contrast scenes, or indoor lighting, the camera software can occasionally struggle. You might get weird exposure changes or pictures that look a bit too over-sharpened. Portrait mode can also be a bit hit-or-miss around tricky areas like hair, sometimes I take a second shot to get the blur right. It’s a decent point-and-shoot camera for everyday memories, but if you’re really serious about mobile photography, you’ll need some patience. Factoring in the lack of a dedicated high-resolution ultra-wide camera and missing 4K video recording, it’s clear the cameras are where Xiaomi had to cut some corners. Plus, the zoom feature while making videos has plenty of jitters.

In the end:
At the end of the day, every smartphone has its compromises, and the Redmi Note 17 Pro is totally upfront about what it’s focused on. It doesn’t pretend to be a pro-level camera or a super-slim pocket phone. Instead, it fixes the things that usually frustrate us in real life: it offers a great battery life, rough-tough body, a great screen, and smooth daily performance. In the Rs 36,999 to Rs 39,999 price range, where so many phones blend together, this one stands out as one of the most practical, stress-free, and reliable daily drivers you can buy right now.
