Kindle Paperwhite 12th Generation

Words: Loviena Patrao

The 12th generation is noticeably larger (7 inches vs 6.8 inches of 11th gen) and slightly thinner. That difference seems very small and subtle, but if you have been using a previous generation kindle everyday, you will feel the difference initially. Does it bother too much? May be just initially, but once I started using it I got used to it and hardly noticed the size difference.

The new model feels smoother, though this could partly be due to it being newer or it is shaped that way. Overall the grip experience when lying down to read is quite comfortable, and the difference is not large enough to be bothersome. The smoother finish might occasionally feel a bit slippery, though this isn’t a major concern.

Thanks to the larger 7-inch screen, each page displays slightly more content -about 2 lines are so more compared to the 11thgeneration. While this is a subtle difference, it is particularly appreciated in daily use and helps reduce page turns while lying down and reading. As for text clarity, sharpness of the font, I could not really differentiate between the two generations. Both are excellent for reading.

The screen is noticeably brighter at the same settings compared to the 11th generation, with a more pleasant, easier-to-read tone. The wider range of tone adjustability gives you better control over your reading environment. Most impressive upgrade is the screen changing speed. It has faster and smoother page transitions, making reading experience overall natural and less interrupted. Changing font is quicker too. Overall navigation on this new device is a better experience than the previous one. All in all, Iquite like this new speed.

Browing through library and home is dramatically improved in speed and smoothness. I find browsing in the 11th generation a pain. It is a bit clunky. So there is a noticeable difference from the previous generation. Could this be a bit slippery sometimes, may be.

Final question
Is it worth upgrading? If you are on an earlier generation than 11th, may be. But if you have an 11th generation device, then don’t rush. While the improvements are real and noticeable, they’re not dramatic enough to justify an immediate upgrade unless the enhanced browsing speed and slightly better display are particularly important to your reading experience.
The 12th generation is undoubtedly better, but the 11th generation remains a solid device that will serve you well for bedtime reading.
