Easyfone Shield Review: Phone for Seniors and Juniors

How many times have you felt helpless because you could not provide a phone to your children because you are worried about them accessing inappropriate information on the web? Or for that matter, your aged parents who are unable to use today’s smartphones and need a simple phone just for calling and occasional SMS? There are a few phones in the market that offer just the right solution for this. The Easyfone Shield is one such basic bar phone that comes IP 68 certified and is dust, and shockproof.

The Easyfone Shield has a lightweight and sturdy plastic body with rubber linings to absorb shock. The phone accepts a dual SIM and a MicroSD memory card of up to 32GB capacity. The company does not share any detailed specifications including the internal memory. However, we found it to be insignificantly small, allowing only phone contacts to be stored. The phone accepts a full-size SIM and hence if you have a nano or micro SIM without the original full-sized casing that comes with new SIM cards, you need to buy an adapter to use it in this phone. To install the removable battery, SIM or Memory card, you need to remove the back panel, held together by four screws. This means that if the end-user is a senior citizen who doesn’t have the fine motor skills to use a small screwdriver, do not expect them to set this up by themselves. The package includes a small screwdriver along with the battery, charger and OTG micro USB male to USB-A female cable.

Once set up, the phone is quite easy to use. You can configure Whitelist and Blacklist so that the user is not bothered by unnecessary calls. Call quality is quite good. The keypad has a nice tactile feel. There is a dedicated SOS button and you can store up to four SOS numbers. Once the SOS button is pressed and held, the registered phone will receive an SMS and a link to the coordinates, Google Map location etc, in addition to a call. Unfortunately, the Google Map never loaded on the Easyfone website link during our review.

The OTG cable allows you to use the phone as a power bank. Battery life is predictably good with the 2500 mAh battery since the phone has only basic features and uses a basic 2.8-inch IPS screen. The device is sealed against water ingress at all entry points by means of flaps, while the battery chamber is protected by a rubber gasket. However, we found the gasket slipping out of place while installing the panel. We checked the water ingress by immersing the device in a bucket of water for about 10 minutes and found the interiors to be dry. Overall, we would consider this device a good choice if you are looking for a basic feature phone for calling, SMS and emergency use.

Review: Boat Xtend

After TWS, smartwatches seem to be the latest hot products that every brand is trying to get into their portfolio, thanks to the newfound awareness about health and fitness afforded by the lockdown. Boat is a popular brand in the value-for-money wearables segment, and Xtend smartwatches are the latest in their portfolio.

The Boat Xtend watch is styled similar to the third-gen Apple watch, though the build quality is obviously different. However, for a sub-₹4000 watch, the brand has done a great job. The watch is made in China but offers surprisingly good build quality and features for the price. We received the black version, which has a flashy golden metal frame around the rectangular bezel. That apart, the watch has a neat appearance with a clean interface. The silicon strap is interchangeable. The Boat Wave app includes an extensive collection of watch faces and is intuitive. The 1.6-inch square display proved quite nimble and responsive to touch.

The smartwatch offers all basic functions including SpO2, Heart rate, sleep tracking and workout monitoring along with notifications and music control. It even has built-in Alexa voice assistant, which is absent even in some of the more expensive watches. Packing a 300mAh battery, the device retains power for more than a week on a single charge. The watch is water-resistant up to 5atm pressure or up to 50 metres for 30 minutes.      

The Boat Xtend is available in Olive Green, Sandy Cream, Pitch Black and Deep Blue colours. It cannot be compared to premium watches in the market but will appeal to you if you are looking for an inexpensive alternative with good features and decent looks.

Review: Asus Vivobook K15

Asus Vivobook laptops have been value-for-money offerings, and the K15 takes this a notch higher by bringing an OLED screen to affordable levels. As Asus says, the K15 is designed with Gen Z users in mind.

The Vivobook K15 features a polycarbonate and aluminium alloy chassis that appears tough for a budget-friendly laptop. The device is thin and light for a 15-inch laptop, about 18 mm thick and weighing 1.8 kg. The laptop is available in Indie Black, Transparent Silver, and Hearty Gold colours. The touchpad includes a fingerprint scanner for Windows Hello login, and it proved quite responsive. The keypad offers good feedback and is quite comfortable for long-form typing with 1.4 mm key travel. I found the compromise in arrow keys a little frustrating at the start, but then it became less of an annoyance after a few days of use. The keyboard offers three levels of backlight and the Enter key has a neon green backlight. The touchpad felt somewhat lagging. The device offers a full suite of I/O ports including three USB-A, one USB 3.2 Gen 1 Type-A, two USB 2.0 Type-A, one HDMI and a MicroSD card reader along with a 3.5mm headphone jack. It provides up to Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax) dual-band and Bluetooth 5.0.

Coming to the main USP of the laptop, the Vivobook K15 features a 5.6-inch Full HD (1920 x 1080) OLED display that provides 100 percent DCI-P3 colour gamut, ideal for videos. The display proved to be vibrant with true blacks and rich saturation. The panel is certified by TUV Rheinland for low blue light and flicker-free operation to reduce eye fatigue. The display has been validated by Pantone and comes pre-calibrated by Asus. However, we felt the factory calibration had over-saturated the warm tones, making it even more strenuous to look at for a long time. So, we attempted a hardware calibration using the i1 Display Studio device to DCI-P3 and found the pre-calibrated setting to be off by a wide margin. If you are into photography or colour-critical use, we would not recommend this display in its native calibration setting. We hope Asus would take care of this in future since the buyers of this laptop are not likely to have a colorimeter lying around to calibrate their displays.

The K15 is available in various configurations. The options in processor include 11th Generation Intel Core i3, i5 and i7, while Asus also offers up to 16GB DDR4 RAM, up to 512GB of SSD and up to 1TB of HDD. We received the i5 variant with 16GB RAM, 256GB SSD and 1TB HDD and the review is based on this configuration. The laptop features Intel UHD or Intel Iris Xe graphics. We used the K15 for photo editing and multimedia other than the regular light tasks, and the device handled all these without any problems. The laptops are equipped with an upgraded 8 mm heat pipe and a new fan to dissipate heat more efficiently. We did not feel any uncomfortable heating while using the device, and the fan ensured near-silent operation.

The K15 uses a 42 Wh battery, which lasted for about 5 to 6 hours in our use. The charger tops up the battery in about an hour. The MyAsus app lets you customise power, performance, audio and other parameters according to your use.

The Harman Kardon certified audio system provides good sound output for video calls and presentations, though this is not the best we have experienced. The camera also provided image quality of the expected levels. The laptops come with Windows 10 pre-installed but are eligible for a free Windows 11 upgrade.

Review: Fastrack Reflex Tunes F02 Headphones

Fastrack had its beginnings as Titan’s urban youth brand, initially establishing itself in watches and sunglasses. Since then, the brand has expanded into various other accessory segments. Reflex Tunes wireless audio devices include TWS earbuds, neckbands, and over-the-head headphones. The F02 is an over-the-head, around-the-ear headphone that offers an affordable solution to high-quality audio.

The Reflex Tunes F02 retails at a price that is within the reach of most people looking at an over-the-head headphone, and at this price, it is feature-packed, offering Active Noise Cancellation (ANC) and quick pairing. The device has a typical design, that looks uninspiring, yet provides a comfortable fit with large and well-cushioned earmuffs that efficiently cuts off most of the background noise even without ANC. The adjustable headband also offers soft and thick cushioning. The plastic used in the band and ear cups does not provide much confidence and appears flimsy. Hence, we would advise you to be cautious while bending it. However, we can vouch for its longevity in normal use. The headphones have a foldable design. The ear cups flex a little, helping you fix it properly over the ears. The device is IPX4 certified and hence splashproof. At 260 g, the F02 is quite lightweight. The headphones are available in black and grey colours.

The F02 has all the controls and ports on the right side including a multifunction button for power, pairing, play/pause, and call answer/hang up, a volume up/next track button, a volume down/previous track button, an ANC button, status LEDs for power/pairing and ANC, USB Type-C charging port and a 3.5mm AUX jack. To use the device in wired mode, you only need to plug in the AUX jack irrespective of whether the headphones are powered on or not. Similarly, ANC works even in offline mode. Just flip the ANC switch and it gets active, cutting off most background noise even when the audio signals are off. The Reflex Tunes F02 uses five microphones for audio pickup and ANC. The device houses a 580 mAh battery, and Fastrack claims up to 15 hours of battery life with ANC and up to 20 hours without it. Though our music listening was erratic on this device, thanks to the number of headphones and speakers on review, our estimate was close to what is claimed. The battery takes three hours to fully charge.

The Fastrack Reflex Tunes F02 uses a 40 mm driver that reproduces audio with good separation. Though the bass is enhanced, the headphone offers competent treble also, unlike the bass-boost devices flooding the market. The mid frequencies are a bit suppressed, and vocals felt somewhat less refined to our liking. However, considering that this is not a premium device at the top end of the market, Fastrack has done a great job with these headphones. ANC is not overwhelming, and you might not feel much difference when you are listening to music because it cuts off only the most disturbing noise such as the hum of air conditioners and ceiling fans. That being said, these are the only disturbances you feel after the tight-fitting earmuffs cut off most outside noises. Call quality was excellent, both in listening and being listened to. The headphone supports voice assistants including Google Assistant and Siri.

Review: Oppo Reno 5 Pro 5G

Rarely do we see phone manufacturers battling out to flood the market with devices with features that are yet to be rolled out, yet 5G seems to be the buzzword in the smartphone market today. We don’t remember witnessing the same frenzy during 3G and 4G rollouts, but certainly, the smartphone landscape has changed considerably between then and now. Oppo Reno 5 Pro joins the crowd, promising powerful performance and power efficiency.

The Reno 5 Pro 5G has a beautiful design with what Oppo calls Reno Glow technique, which provides a textured glow to the phone’s back surface with better fingerprint resistance. The device is available in Starry Black and Astral Blue colours. The camera bump has a glossy finish. The volume rocker is on the left-hand side, with the power button on the right. The bottom accommodates the SIM tray, a microphone hole and the single speaker array. The device accepts two nano SIMs. Though the gradient and 3D curved glass design provide the device with a clean and beautiful appearance, it does not break any new ground in design. The device is light and comfortable to use, measuring 159.7 x 73.2 x 7.6mm and weighing 173g.

The phone uses a 3D borderless sense screen with curved corners and a punch-hole camera. The 16.6 cm Super AMOLED screen offers a 90Hz refresh rate and 180Hz touch sampling rate, which appears dated in a phone that competes with the latest devices optimised for gaming. However, the Color OS 11.1 OS and the interface felt smooth and responsive. Face unlock was quite fast, but fingerprint took a little longer to unlock the phone. The screen reproduces DCI-P3 colour gamut and the device carries HD and HDR certifications from Netflix and Amazon Prime Video.       

The Reno 5 Pro uses a MediaTek Dimensity 1000+, a high-end 7nm SoC for mid-priced devices supporting the latest features like 5G, Wi-Fi 6 and advanced AI performance. The chip uses four powerful ARM Cortex-A77 clocked at 2.6GHz and four high-efficiency 2GHz Cortex-A55 cores. The graphics is handled by a 9-core ARM Mali-G77 MP9 GPU, providing an above-average gaming performance. While gaming was smooth with great response, the position of the speaker disappointed in horizontal orientation. Most of the time, my right index finger obstructed the speaker grille and completely cut off the sound in the middle of the game, forcing me into an uncomfortable grip to let the sound out. The Game Centre offers a customisation option in the middle of a game if required.

One area where the Reno 5 Pro clearly excels is the 65W SuperVOOC 2.0 charging, which tops up the 4300mAh battery in just over half an hour. The device is available in a single configuration of 8GB RAM and 128GB ROM, which is not expandable.

The phone features a 64MP main, 8MP ultra-wide-angle and 2MP Macro cameras along with a 2MP monochrome camera. In most cases, the colours appeared natural. However, turning on AI scene enhancement rendered the images with too much saturation and sharpening. The wide-angle camera appeared less detailed than the main camera. 4K videos were largely fine, but the lack of optical zoom proved a spoiler. Night mode certainly lets you capture an image even in near-zero illumination, but the images cannot be compared with those captured under proper lighting. Dual view video employs both front and back camera simultaneously and is a welcome addition with various layout options to choose from.

The Oppo Reno 5 Pro is a fairly competitive device with a neat design and powerful hardware. The cameras do not disappoint either. We wish the device had stereo speakers and a bit of fine-tuning in image quality.
