Speech Engine in development for Wikipedia

March 14, 2016 by Ankush Mahajan

Wikimedia Sweden has partnered with the KTH Royal Institute of Technology in Sweden to develop the ‘Speech Synthesis Platform’ for Wikipedia. Since the platform is a free and open source, it can also be used on sites running on Wikimedia.

The Wikispeech pilot project is primarily aimed at visually impaired users who have difficulty in reading and navigating the open source knowledge database.

At present, development is ongoing for Arabic, Swedish and English languages, and is expected to be finished by September 2017. There are plans to cover 280 languages in which Wikipedia is available.
