LG V30+ gets a release date for India

LG launched the V30+ smartphone at an event in the capital today. Originally unveiled at IFA 2017 earlier in the year, this is their second flagship in 2017 after the G6.

The device features a 6″ OLED FullVision display with Gorilla Glass 5 protection which is also present on the rear. Due to this increase in screen real estate, the second screen of old has been replaced by a floating bar giving quick access to regularly used apps and settings. The slim weight and curved edges allow for a comfortable grip even when using for an extended period of time. The dual camera setup on the rear uses a 16MP primary lens with f/1.6 aperture and a 13MP wide angle lens with 120 degree FoV and f/1.9 aperture. It also boasts Optical Image Stabilisation, Electronic Image Stabilisation and Hybrid AutoFocus that combines Laser Detection AutoFocus and Phase Detection AutoFocus.

As per LG V series tradition, the V30+ is equipped with a Hi-Fi Quad DAC from Bang & Olufsen. It is the first global smartphone to support Master Quality Authenticated (MQA) technology that allows streaming of high resolution audio. The recorder has also received an upgrade with a receiver that doubles as a microphone to capture a broader sound spectrum. Since it is IP68 rated, the phone is dust and water resistant.

Priced at Rs. 44,990, the device will go on sale from 18 December 2017 excusively on Amazon India. For a limited period, the company is offering one time screen replacement and a wireless charging stand free of cost.

New OLED TVs from LG announced for India

Today LG showed off their latest range of OLED TVs for the Indian market. Overall, there are 9 models spread out over 5 series.

The lineup consists of W7 in 65″/75″, G7 in 77″, E7 in 55″/65″, C7 in 55″/65″ and B7 in 55″/65″. LG claims the series will deliver enhanced range of colour reproduction through the use of self lighting pixels as well as perfect blacks.

LG has teamed up with Dolby to deliver both Vision display and Atmos audio technologies. It even supports all HDR formats including Active HDR, HDR10 and Hybring Log Gamma (HLG). While the entire range is super thin and can be hung on the wall like a painting, the flagship OLED W is even thinner and sits flush against the wall.

On the software front, LG has used WebOS 3.5 with features like Live/Magic Zoom that can be used to zoom into any particular part of a live broadcast and Music playback with lyric display where the user can supposedly select a line for it to play the corresponding part of the song. The bundled remote control can be used to navigate the TV via gestures, scroll, air mouse and even voice commands.

The range starts from Rs.3,50,000 and goes upto Rs.30,00,000. The sale date of the products is TBD.

LG G6 and Tone Active+ are released for the Indian market

First revealed at MWC 2017, LG G6, the latest flagship from the Korean company has hit Indian shores. The device has dropped modular support and has instead focused on fitting a 5.7″ screen into a 5.2″ form factor.

Running on LG UX 6.0 based on Android Nougat, the device is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 821, Adreno 530 GPU, 4GB LPDDR4 RAM and 64GB UFS storage (expandable upto 2TB via microSD). The 5.7″ QHD+ FullVision display comes with an 18:9 (2:1) aspect ratio and is also the first smartphone to incorporate Dolby Vision technology which supports HDR 10. It can display HDR content available on streaming services like Netflix and Amazon Prime Video. The device does not use an edge display because LG stated that touch errors on an edge display were 17.4% while on a flat display they were only 1.4%.

The dual camera setup at the rear uses two 13MP sensors with one dedicated to wide angle shots having a 125 degree lens while the other uses a regular 71 degree lens. The front 5MP camera has a 100 degree wide angle lens. A new square camera mode shows recent photos in one window so users don’t have to stop shooting to go to the gallery to review them. The camera is capable of taking square photos in 1:1 ratio suitable for social media sites like Instagram, Snapchat etc. The fingerprint sensor is clickable and houses the power button.

The G6 comes with IP68 water and dust resistance making it withstand immersion in 1.5m of water for upto 30 minutes and is completely sealed against any sort of dust getting inside. The frame of the device has been built iwht AL6013 which is a type of aluminium commonly used in the aviation industry. The display is protected by Gorilla Glass 3 and the back is safeguarded by Gorilla Glass 5. High quality audio as loud as 132db can be recorded through the high AOP (Acoustic Overload Point) microphone. A 32bit HiFi Quad DAC (Digital to Analogue Converter) is able to enhance audio playback and doesn’t require any special headset.

LG also showed off the new Tone Active+ HBS-A100 sports Bluetooth headband with external stereo speaker, IPx4 water resistance, retractable earbud wire and activity tracking. It is priced at Rs.9,990 but purchasing it with the LG G6 will net users a 50% discount on them.

Available in 3 variants – Black, White and Platinum, the G6 is priced at Rs.51,990 and goes on sale from 25 April, 2017. Special offers available on Amazon India include a cashback of Rs.10,000 for HDFC and SBI card holders valid only on the launch date. Other offers include free google play games and extra Jio data.

MWC 2017: LG G6 detailed, drops modular support

LG unveiled the successor to the G5 at the MWC 2017 today. The G6 has dropped modular support after a lukewarm response from consumers and developers alike.

Clad in an all metal body with a glass structure and rounded edges, the unusually large screen size which is uncommon to the G series can be attributed to the Full Vision display with QuadHD+ resolution. According to LG, the 18:9 aspect ratio has been used to fit a large display into a compact size which can be operated by one hand without much issues. This specific resolution has been chosen since the company states that it is the standard ratio at which most entertainment is shot. The bezels on the top and sides have been kept to a bare minimum.

Running on LG UX 6 UI based on Android Nougat, the device is the first from the company with IP68 certification. In another first, the G6 is the first smartphone to come with Dolby Vision support. Coming to the cameras, the dual setup on the rear includes one wide angle lens with f/2.4 aperture and a regular lens with f/1.8 aperture supporting Optical Image Stabilisation (OIS). The front camera comes with a 100 degree FoV which seems to be a common trend among new launches by the company. The fingerprint sensor rests under the rear camera which also doubles as a power button.

There is no word yet on local pricing or release date.

LG launches K10 (2017) with special safety features

First announced ahead of CES 2017, LG has released the K10 for the Indian market. Dubbed the ‘Dhaakad Phone’, the device comes with safety and design features along with a panic button as per the Government of India guidelines.

The power button doubles up as the SOS button and pressing it thrice will automatically dial the emergency number 112. LG is the first company adhering to Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) recommendation to have a single emergency number. The device has the usual pebble design with 2.5D arc screen associated with the K series and a display which will continue to be functional even with cracks on the screen. The front camera has a 120 degree wide angle lens which will capture a lot more width when clicking selfies. Other features include a rear fingerprint sensor and OTG support allowing for connecting even peripherals like mice and keyboards.

Priced at Rs. 13,990, the K10 is the only device from the 2017 K series available in India for the time being.
