Guardians: a new location-sharing personal safety app, with data security promises

March 7, 2021 by T3 India

Truecaller has been used widely across smartphones in India since its launch and today, is one of the most trusted Caller ID and telephone search engine platforms in India, and possibly the world, with over 270 million active users around the world (200 million in India). But now, Truecaller’s makers – the True Software Scandinavia AB –  have stepped up their game and developed a much-needed and controllable location-sharing app for personal safety: Guardians, which is a freely-available app.

The usefulness of this app is promising for all genders, especially for women – as women’s safety still a pressing issue in India, and on the current occasion of International Women’s Day, safety and security should be one of the many essential factors that must be focussed on looking forward. Guardians’ data-security protocols and useful features are the need of the hour and do make this a desirable app.

First off, the folks at True Software mention that “Guardians will never share any personal information with any third party apps for commercial use, including our very own Truecaller app. This is our commitment to personal safety”, which is good to know and helpful, given the circumstances we find ourselves in today. Guardians needs permission to access: the user’s location, contacts, and phone permission, the latter showing the user’s phone status to the Guardians.

More so, the following are some of the essential and crucial features of the app:

  • User can select their own personal Guardians from their contact list.
  • User can choose when to stop and start sharing their location
  • User can opt to setup a permanent sharing with selected Guardian
  • “If you are just sharing your location for a particular trip, Guardians works quietly in the background”
  • Emergency Mode: Guardians will be notified about the user’s location and situation once the ‘Emergency’ button is tapped. Guardians will be able to follow user’s location. This mode will also share the user’s location with community Guardians who may be nearby, and user will be free to accept or reject their help.

The developers are trying to integrate a mode through which the local law enforcement can be notified and help the user as quick as possible as well.

“There are probably hundreds of apps on the app stores for personal safety and location sharing. But none of them work in a way where you can involve your family, friends, the community at large and the authorities. With this kind of reach, our past four years of research on women’s safety and campaigns like #ItsNokOk, we now understand this problem well. It’s now time to do something about making our cities safer for everyone”, said Alan Mamedi, CEO & Co-founder of True Software Scandiavia AB.

Apple will virtually host its Worldwide Developers Conference from June 22, 2020

May 6, 2020 by T3 India

This is the 31st year of Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) and this year, even with restrictions due to the pandemic, Apple estimates that this will be their biggest conference yet, virtually bringing together approximately 23 million developers across the globe. The WWDC20 will begin in June 22, 2020, and it’s going to be hosted for a week on the Apple Developer Website and in the Apple Developer app – and it’s free of cost for all developers.

Developers around the globe and at Apple indulge in creating breakthroughs by conjuring apps in the iOS, macOS, watchOS, tvOS and the iPadOS. Apple have also announced a ‘Swift Student Challenge” which is a fantastic platform for student developers to flaunt their skills and talent in coding by creating their own Swift playground – which is an app on the iPad and Mac that has interactive and fun tutorials on the Swift programming language.

“We can’t wait to see this next generation of innovative thinkers turn their ideas into a reality through the Swift Student Challenge”, says Craig Federighi, Apple’s Senior VP of Software Engineering.

Student developers who wish to participate can do so by submitting their entries to the Swift Student Challenge until 11:59 p.m. PDT on May 17, 2020. Participants are expected to ‘’create an interactive scene in a Swift playground that can be experienced within three minutes’’. For more information on this challenge, check this link.

As the large community of developers around the globe will have an unprecedented access to the future of the five Apple platforms, they will also be able to learn from Apple engineers.

“We can’t wait to meet online in June with the global developer community and share with them all of the new tools we’ve been working on to help them create even more incredible apps and services. We look forward to sharing more details about WWDC20 with everyone as we get closer to this exciting event”, says Phil Schiller, Apple’s Senior VP of Worldwide Marketing.

We hope developers and students from India make the most of the free-to-attend virtual WWDC20 as things may seem uncertain at this point of time and lockdowns are constantly extended. More information on the WWDC20 like the speakers, lab schedules and more will be shared in June on the Apple Developer App and the Apple Developer Website.

iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus are coming to India in October

September 8, 2016 by Ankush Mahajan

Apple recently introduced the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus in an event in San Francisco, which was live streamed across the world. The new iPhone 7 features an overhauled camera system, stereo speakers, wider colour system and is the first water- and dust-resistant iPhone.

The 12MP camera includes optical-image stabilisation on both devices. The larger f/1.8 aperture with the 6-element lens enables brighter photos and videos, while the wider colour capture allows for more detailed colour reproduction. The iPhone 7 Plus adds a 12MP telephoto camera, that working together, offers optical zoom at two times and up to 10 times digital zoom for photos. By the end of the year, a software update will enable a new depth-of-field effect using both cameras with machine-learning technology separating the background from the foreground to achieve portraits comparable to DSLR cameras.

The new CPU has been designed to be more powerful, while being more power-efficient,  than its predecessor. Out of the four 4 cores, two high-performance cores run two times faster than iPhone 6 and two high-efficiency cores are capable of running at just 1/5th the power of the other two. Graphics performance has also received an upgrade, running up to three times faster than iPhone 6 using just half the power. The new stereo speakers are two times louder than the iPhone 6s by offering increased dynamic range of sound and improved speakerphone quality. There is a 3.5mm headphone jack adapter for using regular headphones and accessories.

The Retina HD display has also been improved to display a wider colour gamut for cinema-standard shades and better saturation. The solid-state Home button has been designed to be durable and more responsive, working in tandem with the new Taptic Engine to provide precise and customisable tactile feedback.

Both phones include support for up to 25 LTE bands and LTE Advanced provides three times faster data rates than iPhone 6 at upto 450 Mbps. The pricing starts from Rs 60,000 with the new devices going on sale from 7 October in India.
