Windows 10

Today is the last day to get the free Windows 10 upgrade

July 29, 2016 by Ankush Mahajan

Windows 10 celebrates its first anniversary today getting launched exactly a year ago for all desktops and tablets. Reception to the OS has been quite divisive with some loving the interface while others citing it to be unwieldy for the desktop. Today is the final day for users of Windows 7, 8 and 8.1 to get a free upgrade to Windows 10.

An important thing to keep in mind is that a user will be upgraded to the same edition they have on their existing OS. So if a user is presently running Windows 8.1 Home, they will get upgraded to Windows 10 Home. Upgrading will not affect your data but it’s still wise to backup all important files before the process.

Windows 10 2

Interested and eligible users can click here to follow the steps to get the free upgrade. This will also make them eligible for the Windows 10 Anniversary update rolling out from 2 August onwards.

From tomorrow users will have to purchase a license to upgrade their OS.

Windows 10 growth slows as Windows 7 and 8.1 users stay put

November 1, 2015 by Darren Allan

Both the big desktop OS market share monitoring firms, StatCounter and Netmarketshare, have revealed their figures for October. Let’s look at StatCounter first.

StatCounter has Windows 10 pegged at a market share of exactly 9% – meaning that it’s now practically level with all the diehards still taking risks on the unsupported Windows XP.

That’s a 1.36% increase on September, which is considerably less than the 2.26% jump seen back in August.

Windows 8 and 8.1 users, by the way, was used by 13.09% of people – down just 0.10% on September . Windows 7, which runs on more than half of all computers, dropped a similarly fractional 0.82 percentage points over October.

As for the figures from Netmarketshare, they don’t indicate such a drop in momentum, with the company having Windows 10 on a market share of 7.94%, up from 6.63% in September – an increase of 1.31%.

In this case, that’s not much of a slowdown compared to the previous month which witnessed a 1.42% increase in share for Windows 10.

So perhaps Microsoft doesn’t have too much to worry about after all, and indeed there’s bound to be a little slowdown expected as time passes.

Netmarketshare has Windows 8.1 on 10.68%, so Windows 10 is closing even faster on its predecessor according to them.

Certainly no one would argue that Windows 10 hasn’t been a big success so far, particularly compared to Microsoft’s previous desktop operating system, which was about as well received as a data breach at a large financial services firm.

Microsoft reveals new wireless keyboard and mice designed for Windows 10

August 6, 2015 by Darren Allan

First up, Redmond is launching a new wireless keyboard and mouse set. The Wireless Desktop 900 consists of a keyboard with “quiet-touch keys” that Microsoft promises will offer a responsive typing experience, along with a full-size mouse that can be used by left-handers as well as right-handers.

These peripherals are plug and play as you’d expect, and offer a 30-foot range along with AES encryption for wireless security. They also play nice with Windows 10, with the Mouse and Keyboard Center software allowing one-touch access to the likes of Cortana and virtual desktops.

The Wireless Desktop 900 launches on October 8 priced at £49.99, although the Wireless Mouse 900 will also be sold separately at £29.99 (this will launch a week later).

Microsoft is also pushing out a new Bluetooth mouse, which will also be available on October 8 priced at £29.99. The Bluetooth Mobile Mouse 3600 follows on from the 3500 model, and is Windows 10 compatible with Bluetooth 4.0 SMART technology.

The mouse is available in black, red or blue, and features a four-way scroll wheel to allow for scrolling across as well as up and down, plus it’s a compact and portable device, which Microsoft promises is comfortable to use.

Some of Microsoft’s existing peripherals are also set to be updated with AES encryption on the security front and Windows 10 features. These are the Wireless Desktop 850 and Keyboard 850, with the refreshed versions launching September 30, and the Wireless Desktop 3050 and Wireless Desktop 5050 sets which will appear late in October.

So there will be plenty of choice for Windows 10 users looking for official Microsoft wireless peripherals this autumn.
