Free Assassins Creed 3 ends monthly giveaways from Ubisoft

December 9, 2016 by Ankush Mahajan

Assassins Creed 3 is the last free game to be offered by Ubisoft as part of their 30th Anniversary celebrations. Originally launched in 2012, the 3rd game in the nearly annual franchise was the first in the series to use the Anvil engine which brought with it better controls and improved graphics.

The action-adventure game told a dual-narrative set in 1775 America and the then present day of 2012. Narratively, it is notable for culminating the story of modern day protagonist Desmond Miles. The past storyline put players in the shoes of Connor Kenway as he fights the Templars’ attempts to take over his native land.

The game was positively received for various changes but was criticised for the uneven gameplay mechanics. Although the glitches were patched out, the series would start to develop a reputation for being unstable at launch. Opting to refresh the series after releasing AC:Syndicate in 2015, the company has gone back to the drawing board and skipped this year. Instead, a movie set in the universe of the games is launching on 21 December.

Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon is the free game from Ubisoft this month

November 22, 2016 by Ankush Mahajan

The standalone expansion to Far Cry 3 is the current free offering from Ubisoft to celebrate the penultimate month of the Ubi30 celebrations.

Blood Dragon is set in the year 2007 where the world is suffering the aftermath of a nuclear war. The premise of the game is a homage to the ’80s VHS Sci-Fi films with its neon visuals and synthwave soundtrack. It is intentionally riddled with tropes associated with the era to make it feel like a product of the time.

The game uses the same engine and gameplay mechanics as Far Cry 3 but is a more focused and linear experience. The skill tree is replaced with a leveling system automatically unlocking benefits while crafting has been removed entirely.

Ubisoft is giving away Beyond Good & Evil for free

October 18, 2016 by Ankush Mahajan

Ubisoft is offering Beyond Good & Evil as the free game this time around. Launched in 2003, the game was directed by Michael Ancel who is also the creator of the Rayman series.

The third person action/adventure blended various genres including puzzles, photo capture, stealth and lite-dungeon crawling. While it received highly favourable reviews, the game was commercially a flop but has since earned cult classic status thanks to a legion of dedicated fans. They have since been clamouring for a sequel since the game ended on a cliffhanger.

Rumblings of a new game started gaining momentum when a teaser and a short gameplay section set in India were leaked in 2008 but everything went radio silent again. Now, after 8 years of dormancy, Ubisoft and Michael Ancel are teasing a part-prequel/part sequel coming in 2018. According to the unconfirmed rumours, it will be a semi-reboot fleshing out the past of the protagonists Jade and Pey’J while later on picking up from where the last game ended.

Ubisoft’s next free game is The Crew

September 28, 2016 by Ankush Mahajan

Ubisoft is offering The Crew as the free game of the month for September as part of their ongoing celebrations. The Crew is an online racing game set in a scaled-down version of the United States which received mixed reception upon launch in December 2014. The game requires players to be always connected to the internet to function at all times.

The game received an expansion titled The Crew: Wild Run last year and another expansion is on the way to be released in November 2016. The Crew features an open and persistent world for racing and free roaming across a map that is split into five regions with each having its own unique geographical features. It takes approximately 45 minutes in real time to traverse the in-game map from coast to coast.

While the game does include a Singleplayer mode, it still requires the player to be connected to the internet.
