Toshiba Unveils New N300 NAS 18TB Hard Disk Drives Series

December 22, 2021 by T3 India

Toshiba has announced a massive capacity 18TB addition to its N300 NAS HDD line-up. With the advent of data generation and utilisation, the demand for higher storage capacities is rising. Toshiba claims that users need fast access to data and the ability to archive and share data in private cloud environments. The 18TB N300 answers the need for greater storage capacities and power efficiencies.

The 18TB N300 is a 9-disk helium-sealed conventional magnetic recording (CMR) drive that leverages Toshiba’s proprietary innovative Flux Control Microwave-Assisted Magnetic Recording (FC-MAMR) technology. FC-MAMR advances the CMR capacity to 18TB and delivers increased density per platter over previous designs. This is the 3rd generation of designs that uses Toshiba’s 9-disk helium-sealed mechanical design.

The ability of HDD using a new MAMR head to significantly improve the write ability of the Microwave Assisted Switching (MAS) effect has been developed recently, and Toshiba have incorporated this to meet the market demand and to advance CMR drive data densities with MAMR technology.

Engineered for all-day-long operations, the 18TB N300 models offer a workload rating of 180TB/year. Up to 8 drive bays are supported by the NAS 3.5-inch drive. The 7200RPM 18TB N300 drive offers a 512MB buffer and delivers a consistent transfer rate of 268 MB/s.

Toshiba Nearline HDD Shipment & Capacity sets new company record in 2CQ21

September 9, 2021 by T3 India

The Taiwanese giants, Toshiba, announced that for a second consecutive quarter, the company recorded a 30% Q-Q growth in Nearline HDD unit shipment and capacity shipped. The Nearline HDD shipments and exabytes reached 2.79 million and 34.15 representing growth of 32% and 33% respectively.

“Demand for HDDs, specifically Nearline HDDs, have been on an upward trend due to strong cloud and OEM demand, while the initial launch of the Chia cryptocurrency fuelled new incremental channel requirements. Toshiba’s competitive Nearline HDD product line up is lifting the company to new records,” stated John Chen, Vice President at TRENDFOCUS, Inc. “Moreover, Toshiba’s FC-MAMR (Flux Control – Microwave Assisted Magnetic Recording) technology used in its 18TB (MG-09) Nearline HDD product should provide a robust foundation to build upon for its next-generation products.”

Trendfocus’ new report shows that Toshiba’s four-quarter average unit and capacity shipped growth rates for Nearline HDDs led all companies at 35% and 46% respectively. ‘Additionally, Toshiba as the only company to post growth rates higher than the industry’s four-quarter average’.

Nearline HDD shipments topped 19 million units in 2CQ21, which is higher than 1CQ20’s record of 17.19 million. Nearline HDD exabytes shipment surpassed the 200 mark as it reached 243 exabytes for the quarter.

Being in the game for quite some time now, Toshiba’s portfolio of HDD products address the storage needs of enterprise, data centers, surveillance, and client markets. For Enterprise Performance, Toshiba has produced the AL Series. For Enterprise Capcity and Data Center needs, Toshiba has put out the MG Series. Meanwhile the MQ series covers the spectrum of Mobile Client HDDs; and the DT series addresses the surveillance and traditional Desktop Client use cases.

Toshiba launches a massive 18TB HDD as a cloud-scale storage solution

February 24, 2021 by T3 India

With a 12.5% more capacity than its predecessors, Toshiba’s new 18TB MG09 CMR drives feature the company’s 3rd-gen, 9-disk Helium-sealed design and is also integrated with the innovative Flux Control – Microwave Assisted Magnetic Recording (FC-MAMR) technology which helps the Conventional Magnetic Recording (CMR) capacity to reach 2TB per disk.

Toshiba states that the 18TB MG09 CMR drives are ‘compatible with the widest range of applications and operating systems’. The MG09 boasts of a 7200rpm performance, and a gigantic 550TB per year workload rating. Power efficiency is given a boost through the Helium-sealed 3.5” form factor and the MG09 also provides a choice of SATA and SAS interfaces.

Aimed at those who are seeking suitable storage solutions, for hybrid-cloud and cloud-scale levels as well, the MG09’s superior design helps cloud-scale infrastructures improve the Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) through its advanced storage density which reduces capex. On-premises rack-scale storage can also be bolstered through the MG09.

“The addition of Toshiba’s innovative FC-MAMR technology advances CMR capacity to 18TB, delivering compatibility with the widest range of applications and operating environments”, said Mr. Takayoshi Tokushima, Senior Manager of Marketing Division at Asia Strategic Alliance, Toshiba Storage Products.
