Flock is a team communication app that competes with Slack

Slack is the leading choice when it comes to collaborating with employees within the organisation. And while Slack offers a Free tier, it does come with a fair amount of restrictions. However, now Flock, an app from Riva that brings in collaboration and more.

The free app is available on Android and iOS, and boasts features like unlimited groups, file sharing, polls, mentions, to-dos, video conferencing and even inviting clients and vendors to get instant approvals from outside the team. The app also allows integrating external apps like Twitter, Github, Trello, to name a few to allow seamless communication and sharing of information.

Apart from the boatload of features, Flock also comes with decent security features like TLS 1.2 data encryption, strict controls over employees’ access to the data, unauthorised access tracking and controlled guest access.

Microsoft Teams – A Slack alternative

Microsoft is integrating Teams to its Office 365 suite of online productivity software. The Slack alternative is another move by Microsoft to become an ‘all-in-one’ service company for organisations and users heavily into collaborative work.

Teams provides a centralised platform online for user groups to perform various tasks, share data or even chat. What separates Teams from competitors is its ability to segue into other Microsoft products like Skype and Outlook. The platform can also integrate bots and other third-party programmes. More interestingly, it offers encryption and other methods of security.

Currently, the service is only available for commercial users working on Office 365 Business or Enterprise. The preview version is available in over 181 countries in 18 languages. It will be out for all users before March 2017.

Firefox 48 brings various changes to desktop and android

Firefox has begun to roll-out the multi-process version of Firefox for the desktop version. Dubbed “electrolysis” or e10s, the release aims to reduce freezing and make the browser much quicker to respond. It promises to offer a major improvement to the overall browsing experience by separating web content and Firefox UI processes.

During real world usage, this means that when a web page is hogging a large part of a computer’s processing power then it won’t lock up the tabs, buttons and menus. To check whether the feature has been enabled is quite simple. Type “about:support” into the URL bar and if e10s is active, then the user will see “1/1 (Enabled by default)” under the multi-process Windows line.

Plenty of changes have been made to the browser design as well. The search bar will give more suggestions utilizing a larger part of the available display. The redesigned discovery pane can be personalized to suit a users needs and also simplifies installation for featured add-ons to just one click. Security improvements enhancing download protection have also been implemented in this update.

The android version has also received new features. Reading lists have been merged into Bookmarks and Synced tabs into the History Panel. The result of this change is that they will be available across all user devices with Firefox installed.

Today is the last day to get the free Windows 10 upgrade

Windows 10 celebrates its first anniversary today getting launched exactly a year ago for all desktops and tablets. Reception to the OS has been quite divisive with some loving the interface while others citing it to be unwieldy for the desktop. Today is the final day for users of Windows 7, 8 and 8.1 to get a free upgrade to Windows 10.

An important thing to keep in mind is that a user will be upgraded to the same edition they have on their existing OS. So if a user is presently running Windows 8.1 Home, they will get upgraded to Windows 10 Home. Upgrading will not affect your data but it’s still wise to backup all important files before the process.

Interested and eligible users can click here to follow the steps to get the free upgrade. This will also make them eligible for the Windows 10 Anniversary update rolling out from 2 August onwards.

From tomorrow users will have to purchase a license to upgrade their OS.

Presenting Android Nougat

Keeping in line with naming their OS iterations after food, Android N has officially been christened ‘Nougat’ by Google. The search giant had opened up a website some time back inviting suggestions from fans for naming Android N. Nutella had been a global fan favourite suggestion along with Nankatai from Indian users who were trying to sway CEO Sundar Pichai with it. As expected, there are many fans over the web who are less than happy with the chosen name.

Google had also used Snapchat as one of the many platforms to reveal the name. The company had shown off the different statues symbolizing the various versions of Android before unveiling the new statue for the Android Nougat which can be seen in the video below. Additionally, they had also presented some of the other names considered although no word on whether Nougat was the winner in their Android N naming contest.

Nougat comes with a host of new features like Split-screen multitasking, Project Svelte to reduce RAM usage, Android TV, Android for Work and improves upon existing features like Quick Settings and Notifications. Android Nougat launches in the fall.
