ZTE showcased their working prototype of a Gigabit smartphone at the MWC. The device features all 5G capable components that can be commercialised once carriers are ready to implement the services.
The prototype is currently running on a Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 based gigabit LTE processor. It is said to be capable of reaching upto 1Gbps which is around 10 times faster than the first gen 4G services currently in operation. According to ZTE, mass production of the devices is possible in 1-2 years but the real hold up is the deployment of 5G towers.
KT Corp, a South Korean wireless carrier is aiming to offer trial 5G services during the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang. 5G networks are expected to be operational by 2020 in certain places abroad but will most definitely take time to come to India since 4G is just starting to get off the ground.
