At the annual Game Developers Conference this year, Sony announced the official launch date and set the price for the Playstation VR. Priced at $399, the PS VR has a release date of October 2016.
The pricing makes it the cheapest VR headset in comparison to the Oculus Rift which is $599 and HTC Vive that costs $799. However, Sony is not providing the Playstation camera, a necessary requirement for the VR to function in the retail package as they feel most Playstation 4 owners would have it already. The camera can be purchased separately for $49.
Interestingly, the PS VR will be coming with an extra processing box but it’s neither an expansion pack nor an add-on. It will basically be handling 3 things dedicatedly that is the 3D-audio processing for headphone output, “cinematic mode” which enables users to play standard PS4 games in a virtual theater and lastly outputs the social screen so other people can see what a user is playing in VR.
