Lava Offers You a Chance to Design the Next Indian Smartphone

Indian mobile handset brand, Lava International Limited, has announced the launch of the second season of its ‘Design in India’ (DII) challenge. Lava’s DII contest invites entries for designing the next Indian smartphone. The contest is open to students and working professionals either presently pursuing or graduated in B.Tech/B.E., Bachelors in Design Program or Masters in Design Program from any institute across India in select specialisations. The registrations will be open from 15th August to 25th August 2021.

Talking about the contest, Tejinder Singh, Head – Product, Lava International said, “As the nation focusses on Atmanirbhar Bharat, the telecom industry can play a pivotal role in facilitating this mission. India has a fantastic talent pool waiting to be tapped. Through the ‘Design in India’ challenge, Lava seeks to offer the country’s youth and other talented professionals a platform to showcase their skills for this nation-building process. Therefore, Lava’s call for entries offers them an excellent opportunity to showcase their creative skills by providing fresh perspectives in our endeavour to come up with the best smartphone prototype for the country.”

Registrations will be via Lava’s website, using the team leader’s email ID and mobile number. Students/professionals can participate in a team with a minimum of one and a maximum of three members. Any plagiarism will result in immediate disqualification of the team.

The contest will be conducted in three rounds – ideation, prototype creation and presentation to the jury. After registering, eligible candidates will receive an email intimation and gain portal access to submit a solution according to predetermined timelines. All submissions will be evaluated by a panel comprising Lava International’s senior leaders. The top 10 teams will then be shortlisted for the Prototype development round.

In round two, the top 10 teams will submit functional Smartphone prototypes/plans. The five top teams will be shortlisted for Round three – the Finale. Teams will be judged on three parameters – creativity, functionality and uniqueness. The final five teams will present their ideas to a panel constituting of Lava’s senior leadership. Sanjeev Agarwal, Chief Manufacturing Officer – Lava International will head the judging panel.

At the competition’s culmination, the top three winning teams will receive a pre-placement interview opportunity at Lava. They will also be awarded a cash prize of Rs. 50,000, Rs. 25,000 and Rs. 15,000, respectively.

Lava’s Design in India initiative is powered by MediaTek.

Lava launched the first season of Design in India challenge in July last year, which received an overwhelming response from across the country. The contest received more than 12000 entries out of which three teams- Ingenium, Magma and Invincible were declared winners. The company also offered placement to the top two performers- Syamala Dasika from Sir C.R Reddy College of Engineering and Nafih Ahammed from NSS College of Engineering. OnePlus 3T goes on sale in India from December 14

While the specifications of OnePlus 3T got revealed late last month when it was launched abroad, the price and the release date for India were a mystery until today.

The OnePlus 3T 64GB variant, available in Gold and Gunmetal Grey, is priced at Rs.29,999 while the 128GB model has a price point of Rs.34,999. However, this model is only available in Gunmetal Grey. This Grey is noticeably darker than the Graphite Grey on the OnePlus 3.

Since the physical size is the same, all the back panels of OP3 are compatible with 3T. The Nougat update is available in beta state right now while the final version will be out sometime in January.

It was also revealed that OnePlus will support the “Make in India” initiative by manufacturing the device in India starting from next year. For the time being, the first batch will be imported with Oxygen OS 3.5 based on Android Marshmallow 6.0.1.

The OnePlus 3 will be available exclusively on Amazon India starting December 12 for Prime customers and December 14 for the general public.

ABB showcases YuMi at Make in India

The world’s first collaborative robot, YuMi, was on display by ABB India at the Make in India event currently ongoing in Mumbai. The dual armed robot has been designed to work safely alongside humans.

YuMi has a lightweight and rigid magnesium skeleton covered with a floating plastic case wrapped in soft padding to absorb impact. In the unexpected event that there is an impact, then the YuMi can pause its movement within milliseconds and can resume again without much delay. It can easily work in an industry dealing with small part assembly requiring precision owing to its flexible hands, camera-based part location and advanced robot control. The compact and natural human like movements of the machine have also earned it the Red Dot ‘best of the best’ design award.

Over 2,500 international and 8,000 domestic companies are participating in the event which is also being attended by foreign government delegations from 68 countries and business teams from 72 nations.

Make in India is an initiative of the Indian Government to encourage multinational and domestic companies to manufacture their products in India. It was launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 25 September, 2014.
