Presenting Android Nougat

July 1, 2016 by Ankush Mahajan

Keeping in line with naming their OS iterations after food, Android N has officially been christened ‘Nougat’ by Google. The search giant had opened up a website some time back inviting suggestions from fans for naming Android N. Nutella had been a global fan favourite suggestion along with Nankatai from Indian users who were trying to sway CEO Sundar Pichai with it. As expected, there are many fans over the web who are less than happy with the chosen name.

Google had also used Snapchat as one of the many platforms to reveal the name. The company had shown off the different statues symbolizing the various versions of Android before unveiling the new statue for the Android Nougat which can be seen in the video below. Additionally, they had also presented some of the other names considered although no word on whether Nougat was the winner in their Android N naming contest.

Nougat comes with a host of new features like Split-screen multitasking, Project Svelte to reduce RAM usage, Android TV, Android for Work and improves upon existing features like Quick Settings and Notifications. Android Nougat launches in the fall.

Google releases Android N for developers preview

March 10, 2016 by Ankush Mahajan

Ahead of the IO conference, Google is surprisingly making the developer preview of the Android N available for Nexus devices. The release of a WIP (work-in-progress) build is to incorporate developer feedback earlier in the product-development life cycle.

The most important inclusions are multi-window, which will be a game-changer once it gets incorporated into consumer models, direct reply as well as bundled notifications, improved Java 8 support and an overall focus on better efficiency in terms of resource usage.

The build will also be available for end users via an OTA (Over-The-Air) update after registering here. However, Google doesn’t recommend it since it doesn’t feature regular functionality.
