Gest: The glove keyboard you’ve been waiting for

November 1, 2015 by Sam Peg

Gest is a strap that you can attach to your hand and fingers that will supposedly replace the tapping, swiping and clicking you’re used to on your home computer, tablet or smartphone.

The device uses accelerometers, gyroscopes, and magnetometers to determine the position of your fingers on the screen. A major question being raised with this product is whether it will have the accuracy to type without you tearing out your hair with frustration when Gest thinks your pressing a different key. According to Gest developers it’s “precise accuracy has a lot of potential”.

Once the device is up and running it will connect to your device via Bluetooth. It will also possess LED lights that will indicate when Gest is running low on battery.

Initially designed for graphic designers using Photoshop, they’ll be able to grab, pull and re-size photos and text all via the Gest glove which all sounds great, but the company also hopes to tap into the virtual reality market.

When two controllers are connected you’ll be able to become a typing whizz as they’ll completely replace your classic keyboard. Although still in a development stage, this device has a huge potential in bringing to the market a fresh way of interacting with our daily tech.

For $149 you can pledge for the early-bird release of Gest on Kickstarter. Shipping is expected for November next year.

Garmin launches vivosmart HR activity tracker

November 1, 2015 by Sam Peg

What makes Garmin stand out from the rest? There are hundreds of activity trackers out there form the Jawbone UP3 to the Fitbit Surge, but there are few that tell you off for sitting too long.

Vivosmart HR reminds users when they’ve been sitting too long by learning your current activity level and creating a customised daily step goal. Basically the vivosmart HR acts like a mother motivating you to take up healthy habits.

If you’re worried about battery life don’t, the vivosmart tracker will last five days although it does fall slightly short of competition such as the Fitbit Charge.

The vivomart HR is an all terrain tracker as you can take it in the pool up to 50m and will measure your heart rate and feedback data to your smartphone. Vivosmart’s sunlight readable display is constantly on, so that when your out for a run or doing lengths in the pool you don’t have to faff with buttons to check your fitness data.

Like all other fitness trackers the vivosmart HR lets users stay connected with vibration alerts for smart notifications such as texts e.t.c. but the vivosmart also helps you track you phone if you’ve lost it.

You can even remote control a Garmin VIRB camera remotely from the vivosmart. And how much does this all cost? Well it’s available in black, purple of blue for the handsome price of $229 (Rs. 10,500), which falls in just about average for an activity tracker.

Garmin launch smart scales that measure every part of your body

October 30, 2015 by Sam Peg

Garmin has just launched a new smart scale which in addition to weight also measures your BMI, body fat percentage, water percentage, muscle mass and even bone mass.

The smart scale connects with your smartphone with the Garmin Connect app so that each time to step on the scales it will feed your stats straight back to your smartphone, so if you’ve been scoffing too much rubbish not only will your scales remind you, your phone will too.

“We designed this smart scale to be both beautiful and functional, and with it we’re able to complete the wellness circle of weight management. We’re also excited to offer this as an option to our millions of running, cycling and multisport athletes who are looking for a smart solution to track body composition data” said Garmin product manager Andrew Silver.

The scales apparently support up to 16 users so that each time you or your friends step onto the scales it will automatically remember your data, which they can grab online or via the app.

The Index smart scale looks extremely fancy and unfortunately you’ll pay for it. At a suggested retail price of £129.99 (Rs. 12,999), most would deem this extravagant, however its smartphone connectivity, and ability to track your weight composition on the go still makes it an attractive purchase. The scales will be available in the UK from November the 13th.

Amazon’s Kindle now available in crisp white

October 30, 2015 by Sam Peg

Launched just in time for the holiday season the new Kindle available in white, is apparently the ‘perfect gift for someone who loves to loose themselves in a book.’

You can read an e-book on you iPad, which does the job, but after a while starts to wear down your eyesight. The non-glare book alternative- the Amazon Kindle has always been a trusty book reading device, and with Amazon’s newest model boasting its most lightweight portable version in white, you might want to consider parting with your cash.

Unfortunately the Kindle white won’t come with any tech spec improvements, so if you were hoping for an even better battery life or a slimmer design you might be a tad disappointed.

The new white version also comes in at exactly the same price as its black predecessor, so that you won’t be paying any extra for style. The only problem we can see with a white Kindle is that although it’ll look clean and crisp when you rip of the packaging, once greasy fingers, messy children and acciendts starts to happen, it will loose that sparkling white finish.

If you opt for this Kindle you’ll sure need a case.

Nintendo’s next gen console: a handheld hybrid?

October 17, 2015 by Sam Peg

Nintendo has apparently started shipping software kits to developers to create games for Nintendo’s NX platform, according to the Wall Street Journal.

The current consensus is that Nintendo will release the NX in 2016 according to analyst David Gibson in an interview with the Wall Street Journal. “We are increasingly of the idea that Nintendo might launch the NX in 2016 because of the softness of 3DS and Wii U.”

With Nintendo’s last console venture the ‘Wii U’ being a bit of a flop, their new console will apparently host the same graphic chips as seen on the likes of the PlayStation 4 and the Xbox One. A portable console with the graphic capabilities of the current leading consoles could just put Nintendo back in the game.

Nintendo says it will reveal more details about its next-gen console but we’ll have to wait until next year’s Electronic Entertainment Expo in Los Angeles to find out what Nintendo aims to bring to the gaming console market.

Whilst Nintendo has been massively out performed this year by the Xbox One and PlayStation 4, Nintendo’s DS platform still performs extremely well topping 53 million units to date with the 3DS model.
