We’ve been impressed with Analogue’s previous retro revival devices, particularly the Pocket, so its
100%-compatible N64 revival is an exciting release. A complete recreation of the original hardware inside
an FPGA chip – meaning no legally iffy emulation – this takes original cartridges, allows you to use original controllers, and scales the whole lot up to 4K. It then scales things back down again, acknowledging the importance of the CRT in the N64 experience and promising to pipe ‘virtually indistinguishable’ cathode ray recreations out of your TV. We need that, but we need it to be good, and screen recreation is the one thing the Pocket didn’t quite get right. Here’s hoping this is strong enough to make four-player GoldenEye as vital as before. Perhaps chuck some rose-tinted glasses in the box.
