Intel’s 10th-gen S-series desktop chips are fast

Intel has announced its 10th gen S-Series desktop processors that can reach clocks speeds up to a whopping 5.3 GHz with Intel Thermal Velocity Boost. Although the new series starts from the same Core i3, the star of the show is the unlocked Core i9-10900K that promises ultimate gaming performance.

The 10th-gen Core i9 features up to 10 cores, 20 threads and support for DDR4-2933 memory speeds. The top-of-the-line chip also allows enhanced tuning that improves multitasking and gameplay.

The chip supports Intel Turbo Boost Max Technology 3.0 that automatically boosts performance on less intensive applications and for users who want a tighter control, the chip’s per-core hyperthreading to turn on or off on a per-core basis.

Moreover, the 14nm S-series processors support 2.5G Intel Ethernet Connector I225 support that can deliver over two times the speed of a gigabit LAN and Wi-Fi 6 for faster and stable downloads.

Asus R558UQ laptop comes with 7th gen Intel processors

Asus recently announced the launch of its R558UQ notebook which is an upgrade over the older R558UR premium notebook. The new R558UQ comes in the latest 7th Gen Intel Core i5 and i7 variants.

The laptop makes use of a 15.6″ Full HD LED display with a resolution of 1920×1080, 200nits brightness and an anti-glare screen. Coming to memory, the i7 has 8GB DDR4 while the i5 model makes use of 4GB DDR4 with an upgradable memory door on the bottom side. Additionally, both models come with SATA 1TB 5400RPM 2.5′ HDD storage, VGA web camera (fixed type), chiclet keyboard with ASUS Smart Gesture and Asus Splendid software.

The Glassy Dark Brown R55uQ i7 model is priced at Rs.59,990 while the i5 model is available in Matt Golden, Glossy Dark Brown, Red and Dark Blue colours with a price of Rs.48,990.

10TB Solid State Drives are a reality

Intel and Micron have been working together on several storage technologies like the 3D Xpoint with their most recent collaboration being the most significant. Thanks to Micron’s 3D NAND flash memory, the 4TB SSD barrier has been broken by the unveiling of a 10TB SSD.

This breakthrough comes after both companies were in agreement about how planar NAND flash had reached its limit with 4TB SSD storage. Micron has developed the first floating gate cell design for 3D NAND allowing capacities of 256GB for multi level cell and 384GB for triple level cell die. The technology also offers considerable gains in read/write and I/O speed.

The enterprise drive is expected to hit the market later this year. While a 13TB SSD is available from Fixstars, the $13,000 price tag makes it cost prohibitive and extremely limited to a select few users.

Intel makes huge memory breakthrough that could lead to 8K gaming

3D Xpoint tech promises to revolutionise storage and system memory, with Intel claiming that it’s 1000 times faster and has 1000 times greater endurance than NAND – and that it’s 10 times denser than conventional memory.

It has taken a decade of research to hone 3D XPoint, which was built from scratch, and offers a transistor-less crosspoint architecture that Intel describes as a “three-dimensional checkerboard where memory cells sit at the intersection of word lines and bit lines, allowing the cells to be addressed individually.”

This allows data to be both read and written in small sizes, with much reduced latency and far more efficient read/write times as a result. This slickly performing, long lifespan, non-volatile storage and memory will be affordable as well, or so Intel promises.

We’ll take that with a grain of salt – or indeed a shovel full of the stuff, as affordable is likely to be a relative term – but the good news is we won’t have long to wait to find out what sort of price premium will be put on 3D XPoint, as this isn’t a breakthrough which is way off down the line. In fact, products are currently being developed by Intel and Micron using 3D XPoint, with the tech set to sample later this year.

The technology is expected to make its presence felt in the world of big data (for more efficient crunching and analysis), machine learning, even the real-time tracking of the spread of diseases – and is also expected to have a massive impact on the world of games, offering a huge turn of performance, more immersive experiences and possibly ushering in 8K gaming.

Yes, there’s a lot of big talk and trumpet blowing going on here, but it seems with good reason. It will be extremely interesting to see the initial products which are rolled out utilising 3D XPoint, and as we’ve already mentioned, we don’t have long to wait now.
