According to a recent global study conducted across 11 countries including India, over 85% smartphone owners have dropped their devices atleast once per year and 55% have dropped them 3 times or more. More than 60% of mobile users have dropped them between shoulder and waist height which is on an average 1.6m.
This is why researchers at Corning have created the new Gorilla Glass 5 keeping the 1.6m drop height as a benchmark so that the screen can withstand damage from it. According to the company, the lab tests indicate that Gorilla Glass 5 survives upto 80% of the time when dropped face down onto rough surfaces.
The company created their first glass cover nearly 10 years ago and since then their products have been used on more than 1,800 product models across 40 major brands.
Gorilla Glass 5 is already available commercially and expected on smart-screens sold later this year.
