This evening at the Realme Camera Innovation Event, the company hosted a hands-on session with the upcoming quad camera setup with a 64MP lens. Going forward, a quad camera setup will be present on all 3 existing series namely Realme, Realme Pro and Realme X.
The full function quad camera system highlights 9 main focus areas: Ultra Resolution, Super Wide Angle, Ultra Macro, Telephoto Lens, Portrait, Expert Mode, Panorama, Nightscape and Chroma Boost.
The prototype units were on hand at the event and we were able to briefly test out various aspects of the camera. The units were covered with black cases to hide their design. Coming to the star attraction, the primary 64MP camera makes use of a Samsung sensor that has been in the making for over a year. Dubbed ISOCELL Bright GW1, it is claimed to be the world’s first 64MP CIS having 0.8um ISOCELL Plus, Tetracell technology and 1/1.72″ Optical Format. The primary benefits of ISOCELL Plus are minimising pixel crosstalk for vivid colour images, good SNR for low noise images and better autofocus performance.
Next in line is the 8MP Ultra-wide angle camera with f/2.2 aperture and 119 degree FoV that supports HDR. As is common with such ultra-wide implementations, finer detail capture takes a hit. Then comes the macro camera with f/2.4 aperture and 1.75um pixel size boasting focus from as close as 4cm distance. It worked as intended but certain aspects felt lacking and are hopefully fine-tuned before the final release. Finally the mono portrait lens has 5 new portrait styles and 8 refined Face Beautification modes. We couldn’t check out all modes but a few of them did add depth in a way that didn’t look too artificial. There will be a 2x Telephoto lens as well but it will not be able to do optical zoom and instead we have to rely on digital zoom at 2x and 5x. This didn’t really look that impressive as optical zoom always tops digital in the end .
Overall, this is a smart move to incorporate the quad camera setup into the entire lineup. It is possible that the 64MP lens is reserved only for the premium X series. Realme has stated they want the new products in the market before Diwali in October.
