Google to block .js attachments starting next month

January 25, 2017 by Ankush Mahajan

Google has announced that it will start blocking .js attachments in Gmail from 13 February, 2017. Currently, Gmail restricts various file formats like .bat, .exe and .hta citing security reasons as these executable files are prone to exploits.

After the block has been implemented in a rollout expected to take a few days, any user attempting to upload a .js file will find themselves staring at a message stating the file was blocked due to a security issue. However, users can send these files over Google Cloud Storage or Google Drive without restrictions.

Additional measures currently taken by Google prevent password protected archives and locked files from being uploaded since they cannot be scanned before the user is able to download them.

Smart Reply debuts on Inbox web

March 17, 2016 by Ankush Mahajan

Smart Reply from Inbox, Google’s other mailbox management app for smartphones is making its way onto the web version. The feature scans and analyzes contents of a particular mail after which it intelligently suggests relevant responses. This feature is made possible thanks to Google’s AI and natural language processor.

The replies are quite brief and short in the beginning but overtime it will learn how a user responds and will accordingly change its wording. These quick responses can also be edited before sending.

The feature isn’t available on Gmail although Google has stated the feature has become quite a hit with about 10% of all replies from Inbox composed using Smart Reply.

Gmailify your Outlook and Hotmail accounts

February 18, 2016 by Ankush Mahajan

Early last year, Google started offering users of other email providers access to certain Gmail features. Finally christened ‘Gmailify’, the service has evolved to offer significantly more functionality.

Major features like spam protection, inbox organisation (with labels) plus Google Now cards are available for Yahoo! Mail and Hotmail/Outlook accounts to peruse.

To enable the service a user needs to login to the Android Gmail app, sign in and enable Gmailify. Since it isn’t permanent you can link/unlink at any time.

Google is planning to enable the feature on iOS as well as add compatibility with other email providers in the coming months.
