Hype: Grand Seiko Spring Drive 8 Day Power Reserve

September 21, 2017 by T3 Magazine

Rose Gold made the jump to watches?
It was inevitable. If you ask us, the implementation is quite tasteful. And combined with the brown strap, it gets a real cohesive look. The black dial might feel
odd but the dark colour makes the gold speckles stand out more.

Seems to me as if the dial is meant to signify something specific.
You’re completely on the mark there. The watch is inspired by the night sky in the mountains surrounding the design studio of Grand Seiko. The
Micro Artist Studio is housed in the picturesque Shiojiri that is located in the Nagano prefecture.

I like the case back design too.
The sapphire case back grants a clear view of the one-piece bridge, rubies and the power-reserve indicator. The rubies and tempered-blue screws are inspired by the city lights of Suwa, located below the studio while the bridge traces the outline of Mount Fuji.

A lot of Japan love! Now then, what exactly is Spring Drive?
Spring Drive is a unique hybrid movement that blends the high torque of a mechanical watch with the high-precision integrated circuit-control system of an electronic watch. Instead of boring you with the details, just know that there is no battery or capacitor.

Anything specific to tell me about the watch movement?
Caliber 9R01 has been designed to maximise energy efficiency thereby reducing friction between parts which otherwise leads to a loss in transmission of energy obtained from the mainspring. A linked series of three barrels help in maintaining perfect timekeeping for up to eight days. Normally, there is only one barrel so this extends the power reserve by over 250 percent.

What about the second hand?
The second-hand glides smoothly and silently around the dial, which is, incidentally, the signature of a Spring Drive watch.

Price: 52,800 Euro (approx. Rs. 37 Lakhs)
