WhatsApp ending legacy support this year

January 2, 2017 by Ankush Mahajan

Making good on its promise from early last year, WhatsApp will be pulling the plug on supporting older Operating Systems and devices starting this year. However, the plan to drop support for Nokia S40, Nokia Symbian S60, Blackberry 10 and Blackberry OS has been delayed with the company extending its support into 2017.

The app has gone through a variety of changes over the years with one of the major additions being enabling end to end encryption on chats. Others have included text formatting, document sharing, WhatsApp desktop, Video calling support to name a few.

With over a billion users recorded back in February 2016, odds are that the popular messaging app won’t work on quite a number of old smartphones.

The confirmed list includes the following:
Devices running on Android 2.1, Android 2.2
Device running on Windows Phone 7
Devices running iOS 6 or below
iPhone 3GS
